Why do you love the Miami community?
I saw it from zero. I was very broke and felt like an immigrant when I first moved to Miami in 1981. Miami has given me the prosperity I never thought I would have — rags to riches. Through this journey I have considered myself lucky because of friends like Bill and Julia that I met in this wonderful city. I love Miami because it’s a very ‘get it done and get it done now’ city. It’s a self sufficient and self reliant community but most importantly, like my son Steven says, “it allows you to be a player.”
How long have you been involved with The Woody Foundation (TWF)? Why?
Since its inception in 2011. My son was a rugby player around the same time Woody played so thinking that the accident could have happened to him sticks with me. Team TWF has created a wonderful calendar of events that has grown community involvement like nothing I’ve ever seen. Woody is so upbeat, positive, has a great sense of humor, and is a true inspiration in our lives. I love having my family involved in this organization.
I would like to thank the entire TWF organization. Woody, Bill, Otto, Lucy, Will, just to name a few. A special thank you to Lucy for being so hardworking and remarkable, she always manages to keep going while making it look so seamless.
I’m looking forward to us adding to the success that the Beckham family and donors have accomplished. It’s interesting to see that TWF’s donor base are individuals under 40 while other organizations have an older donor base. I’m really excited that this generation has a strong commitment to TWF and its events. That’s BIG!
