The Lionfish Bash tournament is a family event hosted in Bimini, Bahamas and our aim is to clean up the reefs by getting rid of the invasive Indo-Pacific lionfish. This species has made a new home all over the Great Bahamas Bank and into South Florida. Although not native to the area the lionfish has mass produced in staggering numbers and is jeopardizing the longevity of many native species.
The tournament also raises funds for the Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital in Miami, Florida, which is located on the Jackson Memorial Hospital Campus. In the first two years we have held the event, the Woody Foundation has donated over $40,000 to Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital which was used towards the purchase of new therapeutic equipment as well as to fund their recreational therapy program.
This year’s event was a huge success! (read the press release)
This year’s Lionfish Bash raised approximately $28,000 for The Woody Foundation, a nonprofit organization formed to aid in the recovery of people with spinal injuries. The foundation will donate a portion of the proceeds from the 2013 Lionfish Bash to Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital in Miami, which is known for its innovative therapeutic programs for spinal injury patients.
The total number of lionfish caught during this year’s tournament was an impressive 338 – and none of the fish were wasted.
